Molecular diagnostics in infectious diseases and chronic disorders portable, took an essential place in investigation and control of these pathologies in recent times decade. Constant technological-scientific progress represents permanent innovation that requires constant updating, and in this line the medical technology career at the Concepción headquarters Andres Bello University recently released the first version Diploma in Clinical Molecular Diagnostics. The main objective of this program is to update its students in the use of state-of-the-art molecular biology tools to support clinical diagnosis.
On April 27, the students carried out the first practical activity of the diploma: “DNA extraction for the amplification of the 16S subunit of the bacterial ribosome using RT-qPCR.” This methodology has greater sensitivity than conventional microbiological techniques for identifying fastidious or slow-growing etiological agents in bacterial endocarditis. This lab was led by program directors Néstor Herrera Chávez and Sebastián Gutiérrez Vega, both professors in medical technology.
This diploma is a pioneer in the training of healthcare professionals in the use of molecular tools aimed at diagnostic support in the region. Its creation was led by program directors and director of medical technology Alejandra Soto Labra. Soto explained that the program’s faculty have extensive experience in research, healthcare and academia, both nationally and internationally.
The diploma is taught in a hybrid modality: the theoretical component is realized virtually, while the practical component is realized in person in the laboratories of the Medical Technology field at the Concepción campus.

Molecular diagnostics
Molecular biology integrates genetics, biochemistry and BCell iology. This discipline led to progress considerable in understanding the basics molecular aspects of biological phenomena that occur in organisms. In human health, it has allowed us to offer the most accurate and precise patients, diagnoses and treatments less invasive, strengthening the relationship between basic sciences and clinical disciplines. In the script pandemics such as the COVID-19 health crisis, molecular tools were and are determinants for creating new strategies therapeutics as well as capacity expansion diagnostics, which significantly improves the opportunity and the reliability of the results.
