Rector Lilia Cedillo presented the challenges of microbiology in the 21st century

  • He spoke at a conference on the International Day of Chemists

As part of the activities implemented at the University Hospital of Puebla (HUP) for the International Day of Chemists, Rector Lilia Cedillo Ramírez organized a conference “Challenges of Microbiology in the 21st Century” in the main hall of this hospital.

The rector, in the presence of HUP director María Virginia Ortega Alejandro and deputy medical director María Guadalupe González González, as well as chemists and students, reminded that the progress of medical sciences in the treatment of some diseases, e.g. as well as the eradication of smallpox and poliomyelitis provided some optimism about the emergence of new infectious diseases.

Contrary to this position, the emergence of diseases such as AIDS or the coronavirus among other multidrug-resistant bacterial strains has proven the fallacy of this prediction. He suggested that among the challenges currently facing chemists and microbiologists, the high variability of the influenza virus and the existence of many animal reservoirs, especially birds, represent a real threat to future pandemics.

Until now in this century, he said that SARS CoV-2 has been one of the main challenges in terms of public health, especially because it still represents an uncertain future due to some aspects of the immune system and its interaction with the virus that are unaware, in addition to the fact that the long-term the effect of vaccines and the occurrence of new variants is not completely controlled.

Considering this panorama, Dr. Cedillo Ramírez various proposals for measures such as the strengthening of microbiological and epidemiological surveillance systems for the influenza virus, SARS CoV-2, parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses at primary and hospital levels. the morbidity of sexually transmitted infections.

He also spoke in favor of strengthening cooperation between institutions dedicated to research in the field of health; take measures to ensure the storage and retrieval of supplies for emergency response; improve diagnostic techniques; continuously evaluate the effectiveness of antivirals, as well as revise policies regarding the training of human resources specialists in emerging and re-emerging infections.
