Festool ExoActive: they created an exoskeleton so that masons can work more comfortably

The construction industry has long sought ways to apply advances in robotics and mechatronics to speed up, make the building construction process easier or cheaper. A local option is, for example giant 3D printers that use cement to quickly build houses, as they are trying in La Plata. Or a brick robot like Hadrian, capable of laying more than 200 bricks per hour.

However, for certain tasks, it is increasingly preferable for one person to work, and here the intention is to make their work easier, increase efficiency and improve the well-being of workers. In this context, exoskeletons are emerging as a key tool to alleviate physical strain and increase productivity in tasks that require prolonged effort of handling elements above the operator’s head.

Festoola German company specialized in electric and pneumatic tools, presented its latest innovation some time ago, ExoActive, an active exoskeleton designed specifically for work that must be performed above a person’s head, which increases physical demands. This portable device which Weighing only 7 kilograms, it provides additional support to the armssignificantly reducing fatigue and the risk of injury during activities such as dry construction, painting, wallpapering or roofing.

Festool’s ExoActive exoskeleton makes masonry work easier by offering active, adjustable support for the user’s body.

How does ExoActive work? Equipped with a 18V battery and compressor, ExoActive offers active and personalized support. A system of air cylinders, attached to the user’s arms, provides a force of up to 50 Newtons (equivalent to 5 kg) per forearm. The intensity of support is automatically adjusted by sensors located in the joints of the exoskeleton, adapting to the needs of each task. The exoskeleton has three predefined working areas: from the pelvis up, from the chest up or overhead.

As the company explains in a statement, “the ExoActive exoskeleton gives users extra strength when their arms get tired, while soothing the neck. At the same time, less physical effort means greater efficiency, greater concentration on the quality of work and thus greater joy from it. The required power can be adjusted on the exoskeleton in seconds to provide specific support where it is needed. “Like a backpack, the ExoActive is light and comfortable to wear, and can also be quickly adjusted to fit any person’s body size.”

Benefits for workers include reduced muscle fatiguel Release tension in your shoulders and neck. ExoActive enables workers to perform their tasks more comfortably and efficiently. This allows workers to maintain a steadier, longer work pace and reduces the risk of injury.
